There are many general health conditions that can increase your risk for ocular problems of the retina and optic nerve. Common conditions are:

• Diabetes
• Hypertension
• Elevated cholesterol

As well, some of the medications used to treat health conditions may increase the risk. For instance, certain medications for arthritis can have a toxic effect on the retina.

Many diseases of the eye can also have a significant effect on the retina or optic nerve.

  • The most common of these are:
  • • Macular Degeneration
  • • Glaucoma
  • Macular hole
  • Epi-retinal membrane

Technology has now advanced such that high quality imaging of the retina and optic nerve is possible in the office setting. We now have the instrumentation to provide OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY (OCT) for patients with these risks. OCT provides the most detailed scans of the retinal and optic nerve tissues and allows for earlier diagnoses and superior monitoring of these conditions. The doctors at Huron Optometric Centres strongly recommend baseline OCT scans with digital retinal photos for all patients with, or at risk for, diseases of the retina and optic nerve.

This new technology adds significant information to that of standard eye examinations and allows better on-going care for patients.

The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) does not cover the fees for this advanced technology, but patients may be able to claim this through other health insurance. Regardless of coverage, it is a good investment to ensure your eye examination is as complete and modern as possible.

Automated Visual Field Testing

Huron Optometric Centres Utilizes the latest technology for assessing visual fields. This instrument allows early detection of glaucoma, neurological defects and field loss related to medication complications

Electronic Medical Records

At Huron Optometric Centres we utilize leading edge electronic medical record software to record examination results. This software allows us to maintain secure, organized data that can be accessed from any of our three offices. The software is fully integrated with other technologies to allow us quick and easy access to all pertinent patient information.

Fully Equipped Modern Examination Rooms

Between our three offices we have 11 fully equipped examination rooms. These rooms contain modern, state of the art instruments to allow us to perform the most thorough examination possible

Automated Pretesting Equipment

At Huron Optometric Centres we utilize advanced technology to gather important data about our patient’s eyes. This sophisticated instrument is able to obtain 4 important measurements quickly and painlessly in a matter of a few seconds. This instrument combines an autorefractor, autokeratometer, autopachymeter and tonometer into one device. It is able to check the curvature of the cornea, the refractive error of the eye, the pressure of the eye and the thickness of the central cornea in a few steps.
This information is vital to the thorough examination of the ocular health and refractive status of the eye.
